Lion Entry Deterrent Systems

Lion Entry Deterrent Systems - Lion Lights

David Mascall installs sustainable lion entry deterrent systems to mitigate HWC (human-wildlife conflicts) protecting predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas from entering human habitats. His main area is around the Nairobi National Parkand also the area around the Massai Mara. His humane approach not only safeguards local communities but also aids in the conservation of these iconic species. There is no charge for the recipients involved. The systems 98% success rate makes this solution unique, creating a true win-win situation for everyone involved.

The Artwork of Zdenek Burian - The age old fear of humans - fire

Light protects humans

Scaring wild animals away with lights is as old as humanity using fire to protect themselves.
Neanderthals and other early humans had to adapt to various environmental challenges, including those posed by predators.
Their ability to harness fire, as well as their understanding of light and shadow, has played a big role in their survival strategies.
The fear that wild animals have of bright and moving lights, stops their natural predating behavior until today.

Human-wildlife conflict

In today's African landscapes, where people lions, and other wild animals coexist, conflicts are common due to livestock predation and threats to human safety.

Human-wildlife conflict arises when growing human populations encroach on wildlife habitats, increasing competition for resources.

Predators enter human areas for easy food. This ultimately leads to negative consequences such as livestock predation by lions or invasions by leopards, even in urban areas. Retaliatory actions from humans in response harm wildlife populations and cause resentment towards conservation efforts.

© Karina Robin Photography - Loonkito
Still a sad reality but there is hope

Loonkito was the oldest male lion in the wild and a symbol of resilience and coexistence. In 2023, aged 18 years, he was speared near Amboseli National Park by herders, responding to his predation on livestock.

The incident shortly highlighted the ongoing tensions between wildlife conservation and the livelihoods of communities living near wildlife habitats. Financial compensation for the affected pastoralists is very little.

Avoiding predation to avoid retaliation is one of only a few strategies proven to be successful and at the same time long-lasting and financially viable.

The solution

Since David was (decades ago) introduced to the idea of using flashing lights to protect Kenya's lions and the pastoralists' homesteads, he's been perfecting the system.
The core, the heart of the system and the automatically flashing LED lights are a simple, but effective solution. One system for a small to medium boma costs $ 350 including all material, and installation and it guarantees a lifespan of up to 5 years. The predator entry deterrent systems are installed free of charge for the Massai.
The families agree to a verbal MOA (Memorandum of Agreement) committing to never harm any predators. They are also requested to contact David immediately if any neighbours or friends experience any human-wildlife conflicts.

A curious lioness near one of the NNP's entrances.
She personifies the conflict the Massai people, the neighbouring residents and the park lions need to live with. The lion numbers inside the park are stable, they breed well and at one stage they need to disperse, to gain control over new territories.
Conflict mitigation is necessary and installing the "Lion Lights" is one of the best tools, creating a win-win situation.

The best way to prevent retaliatory killings is to respond as soon as possible to requests for our help. Esther Tiputet had heard of our Light For Life's installations and was surprised at our rapid response. Several cows, lots of sheep and goats lost to lions and hyenas roaming the area.
Heavy timber enclosures have failed to protect their family's livestock but now she will experience what the predator deterrent systems actually do.

Letuya is grateful to the team for putting the funds together to protect his livestock and also protecting the famous Lions of the Marsh pride.

Predator Entry Deterrent System at the Maasai Mara - 23. May 2023

To eliminate the possibility of retaliatory killing of lions and other nocturnal predators, we have started our installation program in the Maasai Mara.
Sirkoret Merery, his two wives and two sons will no longer be victims of nocturnal predation. Numerous sheep and a few cows have been lost to Marsh pride lions and of course the giggling resident hyena clan.
Many thanks from this family who now can enjoy peaceful nights for the first time in years.

Predator Entry Deterrent System near NNP - 5. April 2023

Gladys Kokooyo lives with her son Liam not far from the Nairobi park boundary.
Her new enclosure has been raided a few times and as the rains have now started, nocturnal predation would again have been a major challenge.
NOW it won't. Light for Life's predator entry deterrent system gives Gladys the peace she deserves.

Predator Entry Deterrent System at Sekanani - 19. March 2023

Fortunately the Sekenani area in the Maasai Mara has had some rain so the ground was softer to inlay the connecting cables. At each post, I have made the wire into a heart shape to show the love built into this special boma.
Muneria Pesi was away but his lovely wife and kids really appreciated the fact that not only will the regular nocturnal predation of their livestock but also the frequent damage caused by roaming elephants will now cease.

Predator Entry Deterrent System at Pardamat Conservancy - 14. March 2023

Occasional visits from lions, leopards and hyenas have seen a constant loss of livestock over the years.
Grandma Muli is delighted about the Light For Life's predator entry deterrent system. No more loss of livestock for them and no need to retaliate against the predators. No Predation, no Retaliation.
Protecting sheep, goats, and cows from nocturnal predation makes it easier to live together with the predators.

Predator Entry Deterrent System - near Massai Mara NR - 5. March 2023

This boma installation is near to that of yesterdays on the Masai Mara NR's boundary outside Sekenani gate.

In less than three years, Dan Koshal and family have been victims of constant nocturnal predation. Over one hundred and fifty sheep to hyenas, fifty four cows to lions and even twelve baby sheep to jackals. What a terrible way to live.

Predator Entry Deterrent System - Near Massai Mara NR  - 4. March 2023

This boma in the SEMaasai Mara had been done today in scorching heat for David Kaoe and his large family. With the absence of the wildebeest migration and very little other game around the Sekenani area, hyenas and lions are a constant challenge as they have little option but to target vunerable livestock enclosures. Over 120 sheep, 40 cows have fallen prey here but now....IT WILL STOP.

Predator Entry Deterrent System at Loita Hills - 11. March 2023

Weary from so many nocturnal attacks on their precious livestock by lions, hyenas, and sometimes leopards, Anthony Koikai and his brother Francis relocated to a remote area near the Loita hills.
A super strong, wrought iron surrounded, eight-foot high boma was constructed. Three months on and already a leopard has taken six of their sheep and a lion, and one cow.
The Light For Life's system, specially modified will at long last see an end to their losses.

Predator Entry Deterrent System near NNP - 25. February 2023

Again a call from the lower Nairobi National Park boundary, the local gang of giggling hyenas attempted to gain access to the sheep enclosure of James Taryia and his family. Three cows lost to lions and over twenty sheep to hyenas is his loss so far.
When you have so little to live on and nocturnal predators take such a toll, the temptation to retaliate is understandable.
Now, with our help, Light For Life's predator deterrent system will not only save their few remaining livestock, it will also save any lions or hyenas from being poisoned or speared.

Predator Entry Deterrent System near NNP - 7. February 2023

Just outside Nairobi National Park, heavy cloud build up but still no rain at all. Everyone here is praying for the rains to start but not a drop. Bridget OleKeku and her three children not only are losing their livestock to the drought but also frequent nocturnal predation. The biggest problem are hyenas and the occasional lion.

David says "I LOVE being busy, especially when it comes to installing our Light For Life's deterrent systems. The access to many areas can be a bit challenging, but we were able to get to this location outside of NNP."
The drought continues and coupled with nocturnal predation, life for Damaris Tarayia is very challenging. Between the local hyenas and occasional visits from passing lions, she has lost several sheep and eight cows. Damaris lives alone, but her son Shadrack was visiting and helped digging the trenches.

"Dry, dry, dry but today the rain clouds are looking hopeful." But once the rains do start, nocturnal predation will escalate. Mzee Nkashina Sapuru and Granny Lidia are wishing the drought would end, though regular attempts on their livestock by both lions and hyenas will increase.
This family will quickly learn will now see an end to their predation problem.

The installation was again on the NNP boundary and in the same area of a large hyena den. "Every where we look it is now parched due to the ongoing drought."
Maria Toret and her husband Benjamin have been frequent victims of this clan but now, with our solar powered, Light For Life's predator deterrent system installed, their Year 2023 starts with no further nocturnal predation.

Overlooking the boundary line of NNP is a little sheep/cattle enclosure belonging to Joel and Simon Kakigo. It is on a migration corridor so lions, leopard and hyenas pass often.
Recently lions killed six sheep in one night and also two cows a while ago. Hyenas have taken twelve sheep so far and a leopard only two.

"Not very far from our last installation near the NNP boundary is this quite remote little homestead. Recently hyenas have built a den not far away and since then over twenty sheep have been killed." Lions and also jackals have taken their toll too. James Kotikash was out herding their livestock but his wife Stella and the children were home.

Along with the terrible loss from the draught Adam, his wife Esther and their family have been devastated by frequent raids from the lions and hyenas. in 2022 alone nine cows and very many sheep and goats have been killed. This boma, will see the end of the nocturnal predation on Adam Tompo Kotikash's livestock. With luck the rains will also bless him.

Showers here and there but the draught is still with us. Not only has Winny Mkari and her friend Gabriel had to contend with loss of her animals because of the drought, but also due to frequent nocturnal visits from lions, leopard and hyenas. Shortly, because Winny lives near the NNP boundary, predation will accelerate as herbivores seek fresh new pastures and the predators follow.

Predator Entry Deterrent System at Siana Springs - 4. November 2022

A resident leopard visited this boma almost weekly, lions also managed to gain entry and hyenas were a constant nuisance.
Just a few days ago the leopard was chased off but not before it had killed one goat. Peter Masoi and his family also have had to contend with elephants regularly breaking down his fence. Thanks to Light For Life's solar powered flashing lights system, now peace and tranquility will be bestowed upon them.

Predator Entry Deterrent System at Siana Springs - 29. October 2022

A large clan of hyenas attacked an enclosure on the Siana Springs Conservancy. The terrible incident resulted in the death of THIRTY-FOUR of old man Olotualan Letoluo's sheep.
He has now placed the remaining few sheep he has left in his son's Kinanta Letoluo's family boma which is where we have placed our Light For Life's predator deterrent system
Over the years , Olotualan has lost countless sheep, goats and cattle to hyenas, leopard and lions. This will now cease.

Predator Entry Deterrent System near the Massai Mara NR Double Crossing area - 12. October 2022

This installation was done in the area of Double Crossing at the homestead of Amos Sitany
Being market day, Amos's wife was out but their three sons were there to assist. Between the local hyena clan, a passing leopard and the occasional lion visit, two cows, eighteen sheep and two goats have been killed. The frequent sounds of hunting predators in the night will no longer have to be of concern for the Sitany family.
With the "Lion Lights", the conflict is reduced, thereby reducing retaliatory killings.

Human Wildlife Conflict is a constant issue in all areas surrounding the Maassai Mara. Farming communities expand, natural habitat is destroyed and natural prey is displaced. Less prey equals less natural food for territorial predators, more predation of livestock.
This recently rebuilt enclosure by Moses and Agnes Senkai had failed to stop a resident leopard from taking his sheep and a calf. Lions and hyenas have also attempted to gain access but so far been chased away.

Night after night, the lions and hyenas come visiting, especially when the rains commence. Endless sleepless nights chasing predators away from their precious livestock will now come to an end.

The back tracks to this area near the NNP boundary are steep, dry and very dusty and pass the wildlife corridor where often the lions exit and enter the park in search of food.
William Lairunpe, wife Anne Kompe and their four children relocated here to escape constant nocturnal predation. Despite all efforts to stop this challenge, nothing had changed....untill NOW.

Only a short distance from the NNP boundary is a little homestead inhabited by Elija Parmeyian and his wife Joan. Almost every night they are visited by both lions and hyenas and have to get up to chase them away before they can kill his few sheep and cattle.
The area now is so very dry due to the draught, survival was a real challenge even without losing their precious livestock to predation.

Predator Entry Deterrent System near Maasai Mara - 24. July 2020

Olompala Kasoe and his family live not far from the Masai Mara on the boundary of Emarti and Naibosho conservancies in the territory of the Enisikaria pride of 27 LIONS, a very active female LEOPARD and of course a gang of hyenas. Sleep is usually disrupted by attempted predation and they have lost many goats, sheep and cattle.

6 lions attacked on Mr Tatayia's boma. By the time the family went out, the lions had already eaten one sheep and killed two more.
The boma is pretty strong but any lion or leopard can jump over and take livestock.

David called this the "Widows Boma". Seventy-year-old and nearly blind, Virginia Mpaine lives here with her six children. She doesn't have much and despite the efforts made, to secure her livestock, even corrugated iron sheets have not helped much. Thanks to the kind donations from some FoNNap members, she will be able to worry less and sleep more.

Lions got into an enclosure and killed some sheep last night. One of the best ways to prevent retaliatory killings is to get to the scene as fast as possible and take action.

Again our friends from FONNAP (Friends of Nairobi National Park) came to the financial rescue. No more sleepless nights for this family......

Sision Sarompe Romo's brother-in-law Joseph lost three sheep to a young lioness three weeks ago. No retaliatory action was taken though this is the third attack in a few months.

Tonight will be the first time in a very long while that Joseph and his wife will not have to get up in the night to chase lions or hyenas away from their livestock enclosure. A MASSIVE THANK YOU!

A call for help from the local Pastor. The lions that visited a few nights ago sat outside his homestead and teased him all last night.

Members for FONNAP ( Friends Of Nairobi National Park) came to visit whilst David was doing the installation and then left to go find the culprits.
